Reading is one of the better ways to sustain our Brain Power as we age, but paper books can be hard to handle for older eyes.
I recently decided to study a favorite book which I’d read many times over my lifetime. I wanted to use it as a template to educate myself on the best way to write a story. Without thinking, I ordered a copy of the hard-cover book as I’ve always done. What a surprise it was to find that it was just too difficult for me to read the pages.
My eyesight isn’t bad. I use reading glasses of various magnifications for different tasks. This was the first time I stopped reading because it hurt my eyes.
I went back to Amazon and got the kindle version. I don’t own a Kindle Reader, but there is free downloadable software for MAC and PC which allows you to read books on your computer. What a difference that made for me. The Reader gives you type size, page color, and layout options which allow you to optimize your reading experience. Of course, I don’t take my laptop with me when I go out, so reading in public places is lost to me, but I was never really able to concentrate under those conditions anyway, so that won’t be missed. Not by me. Of course, if you don’t use a computer, you can still get a Kindle reader.
Watching television will not help our brain stay flexible, but reading will enhance our Brain Power as we age.
