Vertigo is more than just unpleasant. It is dangerous because it increases your risk of loss of balance resulting in a fall.
There are multiple risk factors involved in falls. The first factor is not enough physical activity. As we get older it becomes harder and harder to engage in physical activities. This factor leads to a lack of strength and a loss of the flexibility in our bones and muscles.
We all know that physical exercise is good for us, both mentally and physically. But, let’s be frank, the older we get the more set in our ways we become. I HATE going to the gym or the pool and will find any excuse to stay home. This isn’t laziness. It’s stubbornness.
Medicare Advantage Plans will pay up to $37 per month to pay for your gym membership, whether at the local YMCA or any of the many 24-hour franchises out there. Be sure to call your specific plan to find out which franchises they will pay for before you sign up.
I recently came across another way to strengthen the muscles in the ankle and knees, and I can do it at home. This takes only a few seconds and is extremely efficient.
- Stand next to something stable.
- Put your weight on one leg.
- Place your opposite foot on top of the foot of the standing leg.
- Let go of your support and balance.
What this does is force the tiny muscles in your ankles to clench to balance you. Count the seconds, then switch to your other leg and repeat.
Even if you can only hold this for 10, 20 or 30 seconds, it will build strength in those muscles.
